Lord Pearson calls for a Referendum

Saturday, 12th December 2009

Malcolm, Lord Pearson has called for an In/Out referendum on the European Union in a question to the Government in the House of Lords.

"The argument for Britain's people getting a choice about how they are governed is getting stronger and stronger", he said yesterday.

"Whereas the political classes, be they the Labour Government, the Conservative leadership and of course the Lib Dems just get shriller and shriller".

"Opinion polls show a slow but steady increase in support for UKIP's simple proposals that the UK should leave the EU whilst maintaining a simple trading relationship. Of course people's support for this can hardly be a surprise, after all that is all they voted for last time they were given a choice, over 30 years ago".

"I am pleased to see that Better Off Out member Douglas Carswell is trying to push for a referendum in the Commons, and I wish him well.

"However despite his good intentions, the fact that he is 14th in the ballot and the way in which his own party leadership turns its face against such a thing does not lead me to believe he will be successful."
